parental axes = Stamm-Axen Bateson has “parental stems”. Stamm can indeed mean “stem”, but also “stock”, “strain” or “tribe”. It is in this genealogical sense, e.g., that Mendel speaks of Stamm-Arten (“parent-species”; see p. 5, s. 10). Mendel hence talks of parental traits here, not a certain kind of axis.
