segregation = Ausscheidung Mendel is using a term here with a number of interesting connotations. In physiology, it is used for excretion, in chemistry for precipitation or deposition, and in geology for the formation of minerals from liquid phases. All these connotations share the idea that a substance is freed from a mixture or solution, hence leading to a purification.
