Für jeden einzelnen von den nachfolgenden Versuchen wurden 100 Pflanzen ausgewählt, welche in der ersten Generation das dominirende Merkmal besassen, und um die Bedeutung desselben zu prüfen, von jeder 10 Samen angebaut.
3. Versuch. Die Nachkommen von 36 Pflanzen brachten ausschliesslich graubraune Samenschalen; von 64 Pflanzen wurden theils graubraune, theils weisse erhalten.
4. Versuch. Die Nachkommen von 29 Pflanzen hatten nur einfach gewölbte Hülsen, von 71 hingegen theils gewölbte, theils eingeschnürte.
5. Versuch. Die Nachkommen von 40 Pflanzen hatten blos grüne Hülsen, die von 60 Pflanzen theils grüne, theils gelbe.
6. Versuch. Die Nachkommen von 33 Pflanzen hatten blos axenständige Blüthen, bei 67 hingegen waren sie theils axenständig, theils endständig.
7. Versuch. Die Nachkommen von 28 Pflanzen erhielten die lange Axe, die von 72 Pflanzen theils die lange, theils die kurze.
Bei jedem dieser Versuche wird eine bestimmte Anzahl Pflanzen mit dem dominirenden Merkmale constant. Für die Beurtheilung des Verhältnisses, in welchem die Ausscheidung der Formen mit dem constant bleibenden Merkmale erfolgt, sind die beiden ersten Versuche von besonderem Gewichte, weil bei diesen eine grössere Anzahl Pflanzen verglichen werden konnte. Die Verhältnisse 1,93 : 1 und 2,13 : 1 geben zusammen fast genau das Durchschnitts-Verhältniss 2 : 1. Der 6. Versuch hat ein ganz übereinstimmendes Resultat, bei den anderen schwankt das Verhältniss mehr oder weniger, wie es bei der geringen Anzahl von 100 Versuchspflanzen nicht anders zu erwarten war. Der 5. Versuch, welcher die grösste Abweichung zeigte, wurde wiederholt, und dann, statt des Verhältnisses 60 : 40, das Verhältniss 65 : 35 erhalten. Das Durchschnitts-Verhältniss 2 : 1 erscheint demnach als gesichert. Es ist damit erwiesen, dass von jenen Formen, welche in der ersten Generation das dominirende Merkmal besitzen, zwei Theile den hybriden Character an sich tragen, ein Theil aber mit dem dominirenden Merkmale constant bleibt.
Das Verhältniss 3 : 1, nach welchem die Vertheilung des dominirenden und recessiven Characters in der ersten Generation erfolgt, löst sich demnach für alle Versuche in die Verhältnisse 2 : 1 : 1 auf, wenn
man zugleich das dominirende Merkmal in seiner Bedeutung als hybrides Merkmal und als Stamm-Character unterscheidet.
For each of the following trials, 100 plants were selected that possessed the dominating trait in the first generation, and in order to test its meaning, 10 seeds were cultivated from each of the selected plants.
3rd trial: The descendants of 36 plants yielded exclusively grey-brown seed coats; of 64 plants partly grey-brown and partly white ones were received.
4th trial: The descendants of 29 plants had only simply arched pods, whereas [the descendants] of 71 [had] partly arched and partly constricted ones.
5th trial: The descendants of 40 plants had only green pods, those of 60 plants partly green and partly yellow ones.
6th trial: The descendants of 33 plants had flowers positioned along the axis, whereas in 67 plants some were positioned axially and some distally.
7th trial: The descendants of 28 plants received the long axis, that of 72 plants partly the long, partly the short [axis].
In each of these trials, a certain quantity of plants with the dominating trait becomes constant. For the assessment of the proportion by which the segregation of forms with the trait remaining constant occurs, the first two trials are of particular weight, because a larger quantity of plants could be compared. The proportions 1.93 : 1 and 2.13 : 1 together give almost exactly the average ratio of 2 : 1. The 6th experiment yields quite a concordant result, while in the other experiments the proportion fluctuates more or less, as could not be expected otherwise given the small quantity of 100 experimental plants. The 5th trial, which showed the greatest deviation, was repeated and then instead of the ratio 60 : 40, the ratio 65 : 35 was obtained. The average proportion of 2 : 1 thus seems to be ascertained. It is thus proven that, of those forms that possess the dominating trait in the first generation, two parts carry the hybrid character, whilst one part remains constant with the dominating trait.
The proportion of 3 : 1 according to which the distribution of the dominating and recessive characteristic occurs in the first generation, thus resolves itself into the proportion 2 : 1 : 1 in all experiments, if one all along distinguishes the dominating trait in its meaning as a hybrid trait and as a parental characteristic.
