If one assumes that all plants in all generations, on average, have an equal degree of fertility, and if one considers furthermore that each hybrid produces seeds, half of which will give rise to hybrids again, while the other half becomes constant in equal parts with both traits, then the numerical proportions for progeny in each generation emerge from the following tabulation, where A and a again denote the two parental traits and Aa the hybrid form.

generation = Generation See See p. 3, s. 8.

constant = constantes See p. 5, s. 5

numerical proportions = Zahlenverhältniss See p. 3, s. 8.

tabulation = Zusammenstellung Bateson has “summary”, we follow Sherwood. Any systematic arrangement of objects or facts can be referred to as a Zusammenstellung, but Mendel uses it with reference to tabular presentations of experimental results or predictions; see also p. 26, s. 5.

where A and a again denote = wobei A und a wieder … bezeichnet Mendel is coming back to his notation system, which he introduced on the previous page (see p. 17, s. 6). Here, however, he is using it for the purpose of developing a mathematical model, which he could not possibly confirm empirically.

parental traits = Stamm-Merkmale See p. 16, s. 14.

hybrid form = Hybridform See p. 15, s. 7.
