Für die eben besprochenen Versuche wurden Pflanzen verwendet, welche nur in einem wesentlichen Merkmale verschieden waren.
In the experiments just reviewed, plants were used that were different in one essential trait only.

just = eben Bateson and Sherwood have “above”. Mendel’s use of a temporal, rather than spatial, adverb indicates that his paper was based on the text he actually read in front of the Brno naturalists’ association.

reviewed = besprochenen Bateson has “described”, Sherwood “discussed”; see p. 3, s. 2.

essential = wesentlichen Bateson adds a footnote to his translation expressing doubts that Mendel could actually have worked with plants differing with respect to one single character only. As he points out, this is probably why Mendel emphasises difference in an “essential trait”; see William Bateson, Mendel’s Principles of Heredity (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press 1902), p. 59.
