Diese Entwicklungsreihe ist unbestritten eine Combinationsreihe, in welcher die beiden Entwicklungsreihen für die Merkmale A und a, B und b gliedweise verbunden sind.
This developmental series is indisputably a combination series in which both developmental series for the traits A and a, B and b, are joined member by member.
combination series = Combinationsreihe This is clearly a reference to combinatorics. The “series” can indeed, as stated in the next sentence, simply be gained by “combining” A + 2Aa + a with B + 2Bb + b through multiplication (for further discussion, see p. 30, s. 7). The concept was quite commonly used in botany and mineralogy to explain the generation of form. Thus Andreas von Ettingshausen (1796–1878), one of Mendel’s teachers at the the University of Vienna, proposed in 1843 to look at crystal series as a result of combinations of elementary forms; see Anna Matalová, “The laws on the origins of crystal forms and Mendel’s theory on the origin and development of plant forms”, Acta historiae rerum naturalium necnon technicarum 23 (1991), pp. 79–92. For a botanical example, see August Karl Joseph Corda, Pracht-Flora europaeischer Schimmelbildungen (Leipzig and Dresden: Gerhard Fleischer, 1839), p. 9. Max Wichura as well speaks of hybrids as “combinations” (Combinationen); see Max Ernst Wichura, Die Bastardbefruchtung im Pflanzenreich, erläutert an den Bastarden der Weiden (Breslau: E. Morgenstern, 1865), p. 8.
developmental series = Entwicklungsreihe See p. 17, s. 6.
joined = verbunden Both Bateson and Sherwood have “combined”. Verbunden derives from the verb verbinden; see p. 10, s. 14.
member by member = gliedweise See p. 20, s. 12.
