Aus 45 Befruchtungen des zweiten Jahres wurden 187 Samen erhalten, wovon im dritten Jahre 166 Pflanzen zur Blüthe gelangten.
Out of 45 fertilisations in the second year, 187 seeds were obtained, of which 166 plants came to flower in the third year.
Both Bateson and Sherwood have “only 166”; there is no indication in the German original that Mendel conisdered this a poor result. Diminished fertility always poses a problem though, as Mendel seems to have been aware (see p. 27, s. 7), since it may introduce a bias. This experiment took three years, instead of two as the preceding one, because Mendel was working with vegetative characters.
