Alle Verbindungen, welche durch die Vereinigung der verschiedenen Merkmale möglich wurden, erschienen pünctlich und in nahezu gleicher Anzahl.
All conjunctions that were possible through the union of the various traits appeared punctually and in almost equal numbers.

conjunctions = Verbindungen See p. 10, s. 14.

union = Vereinigung See p. 41, s. 6.

punctually = pünctlich Bateson has “duly”. In nineteenth-century German, pünctlich referred to accuracy with respect to a given standard in general, whereas today it usually refers to keeping to time; see Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm, Deutsches Wörterbuch, online-edition, s.v. “pünktlich” (1889). It may be that Mendel was indeed thinking of time here, since his hypothesis not only makes claims about the ratios in which traits appear in the descendants of hybrids, but also in which generation these ratios appear. Sherwood accordingly has “when expected”, which is not literal, but captures quite nicely what Mendel may have had in mind with his formulation.

quantity = Anzahl See p. 3, s. 8.
