Diese Reihe wird bekanntlich durch den Ausdruck: A + 2Aa + a bezeichnet, wobei A und a die Formen mit den constant differirenden Merkmalen und Aa die Hybrid-Gestalt beider bedeuten.
This series, as we know, is designated by the expression A+2Aa+a, in which A and a signify the forms with constantly differing traits and Aa the hybrid conformation of the two.

as we know = bekanntlich Bekanntlich is a phrase usually used to refer to something widely known, and there are instances in which Mendel uses it that way (see p. 33, s. 10 and p. 36, s. 10). In this case, however, Mendel is referring to something he only just found out, which therefore could not be widely known at all (see p. 17, s. 6). Using the term in this way, in order to avoid long-winded explanation by claiming that something — preferably something one has found out oneself — is widely known, while it clearly is not, is very popular among German-speaking scholars even today. As we all know, it gives the reader (or listener) the feeling that they share something of the very precious authority of the author (or presenter).

expression = Ausdruck See p. 17, s. 6.

forms = Formen See p. 3, s. 8.

conformation = Gestalt See p. 10, s. 8.

constantly differing = constant differirende See p. 5, s. 5.
