Die auffallende Regelmässigkeit, mit welcher dieselben Hybridformen immer wiederkehrten, so oft die Befruchtung zwischen gleichen Arten geschah, gab die Anregung zu weiteren Experimenten, deren Aufgabe es war, die Entwicklung der Hybriden in ihren Nachkommen zu verfolgen.
The striking regularity with which the same hybrid forms always recurred whenever fertilisation happened between like species inspired further experiments, the task of which was to follow up the development of hybrids in their descendants.

hybrid forms = Hybridformen See p. 15, s. 7.

recurred = wiederkehrten Both Bateson and Sherwood have “reappear”. The verb wiederkehren, however, usually applies to actual persons or things, not phenomena or manifestations, as suggested by “reappear”.

development = Entwicklung Bateson uses the plural “developments”, thus relating the term to individual hybrids and their development. Mendel, however, talks about development as a process that not only applies to individuals, but to collectives of interrelated individuals as well, so the singular, which Sherwood uses as well, is correct. Entwicklung is derived from the verb entwickeln, meaning to unfold, unroll, or unwrap. The term is thus quite a literal rendition of the Latin evolutio, which originally designated the unfolding of scrolls, and was applied by seventeenth-century natural philosophers to describe the unfolding of embryos (cf. p. 4, s. 1, and p. 5, s. 10).

species = Arten See p. 6, s. 14.
