That fertility was diminished in this experiment stands in marked contrast to Mendel’s demand that hybridisation experiments should ideally involve crosses that produce fertile offspring (see p. 5, s. 7). Mendel is not only trying to extend his experiments to other species, he also tries to extend it to more difficult cases that in one way or other defeat the ideal experimental conditions.
