This is one of many concatenations of independent, full sentences in Mendel’s paper, with commas instead of full stops or conjunctions. The result is a condensed protocol style, reminiscent of a note book or journal. Large portions of Gärtner’s Versuche und Beobachtungen were written like this, although Gärtner did take care to separate his sentences by colons or semi-colons, rather than just commas. We have used semicolons as well here and elsewhere in our translation, following the example of both Bateson and Sherwood.
