ganz = completely Throughout his translation, Bateson shows a tendency to translate ganz with “quite”, which is not wrong but ambiguous because of the wider and polyvalent meaning of “quite”. Especially here, it might be understood to mean “to a large extent”, but Mendel clearly says that the plants in question were totally sterile. We follow Sherwood.
