good species = gute Arten Judged by the criterion for “good” species formulated here, Mendel’s pea varieties would clearly have counted as very “bad” species for most botanists. Anton Kerner von Marilaun (1831–1898) published a series of articles on the topic during the 1860s in the Oetserreichische botanische Zeitschrift which he republished as a brochure in 1866. Kerner argued that what were considered “good” and “bad” species — a concept he associated with the exchange of botanical specimens (Tauschverkehr) — varied considerably with local botanical tradition. Varieties that Viennese botanists called “bad” species, for example, were perfectly representative of the Hungarian flora; see Anton Kerner, Gute und schlechte Arten (Innsbruck: Wagner, 1866), pp. 2–3.
