Some justification for the stated view lies in the proof carried out for Pisum that the behaviour of two differing traits respectively in hybrid union is independent of any of the other differences between both parental plants, and furthermore, that the hybrid produces as many kinds of germ and pollen cells as constant combination forms are possible.
two differing traits respectively = je zweier differirender Merkmale Bateson has “each pair of differentiating characters”, and Sherwood has “a pair of differing traits”; see p. 7, s. 3. Mendel refers to the “law of combination of differing traits”, which he established in Section 8 (see p. 22, s. 8) and the explanation he provided for this law on the basis of back-crossing experiments (see p. 32, s. 2). As elsewhere (see, e.g., p. 31, s. 5) he restricts the validity of these general statements to Pisum.
constant = constante See p. 5, s. 5.
hybrid union = hybrider Vereinigung See p. 41, s. 6.
as many kinds = so vielerlei On the suffix -lei see p. 42, s. 4 .
