Unter je 5 Pflanzen, welche für die beiden Versuche zur Befruchtung verwendet waren, stimmten, wie der nächstjährige Anbau zeigte, mit der Pollenpflanze überein:

  1Pflanze 1 Merkmal.
Among five plants each that had been used for fertilisation in the two experiments, the following, as shown by cultivation in the next year, agreed with the pollen plant:

  1 plant 1 trait.

had been used = verwendet waren Bateson has “were selected”, Sherwood “used”. This is an odd grammatical construction that is found in the manuscript as well. One would expect the past tense passive (verwendet wurden), or past perfect passive (verwendet worden waren). We went for the latter reading in our translation, because Mendel speaks from the point of view of having cultivated F3 already.

pollen plant = Pollenplanze This is “species B” with the recessive traits in the first experiment, and “species A” with the dominant traits in the second. It is likely that Mendel was working with seed characters in these experiments, since this would have allowed him to ascertain constancy on F3 plants already; see p. 12, s. 2.
