The various pea forms selected for fertilisation exhibited differences in the length and colouring of the stalk, the size and shape of their leaves, the position, colour and size of the flowers, the length of the pedicule, the colour, shape and size of the pods, the shape and size of the seeds and in the colouration of the seed coat and the albumen.

shape = Gestalt Bateson has “form”, we follow Sherwood. Gestalt is used here in its merely morphological sense of “shape”. There are a few instances where Mendel uses the term in a more general and holistic sense, and in these instances we have translated Gestalt by “conformation”; see p. 10, s. 8.
colouration = Färbung Both Bateson and Sherwood have “colour”, but the expression indicates more of a tint or shade than a clear cut colour.
