This is either coloured white, with which white flower colour is constantly conjoined; or it is grey, grey-brown, leather-brown with or without violet spots, in which case the colour of the standard appears violet, that of the wings purple, and that of the pedicels at the leaf axils marked red.
standard = Fahne; wings = Flügel These are conventional terms used in the description of leguminose flowers. The standard is sometimes also referred to as “banner”.
constantly conjoined = constant […] verbunden Bateson has “constantly correlated”, Sherwood “always associated”. Mendel notes here that two characters are coupled, and hence inherited together, as indicated by the use of the adverb constant (see p. 5, s. 5).
