Conformation = Gestalt Bateson has “Forms”, Sherwood “Form”. Gestalt has holist connotations similar to the term Form, which Mendel also sometimes uses with respect to hybrids and which notably includes not only visible traits but also their behaviour in transmission (see p. 15, s. 7). We have translated Gestalt here and in other instances as “conformation” in order to distinguish it from Form (“form”) while in other cases, where the same term is clearly used to refer to the outline of plant parts, we have chosen “shape” as a translation (cf. p. 7, s. 6).
