What Mendel does not mention explicitly here is that he chose to use a pollen donor with recessive traits only, so that his notation is also in line with the convention, formulated on p. 17, s. 6, to designate recessive characters with small letters. As at the start of the previous section, and as hinted at by the remark that the aim is to gain a “convenient overview”, the notation system is again used for the presentation of empirical results, so Bateson’s and Sherwood’s translations are not completely off the mark.
