As is evident from the above tabulation, the first and third trials had to render entirely identical conjunctions, just like the second and fourth; the success should also become partially apparent in the shape and colour of the artificially fertilized seeds in the second year already.
The manuscript originally had ersten (“first”), which Mendel deleted and replaced by zweiten (“second”). In the first year, the back crosses between hybrids and their parental forms (P in modern genetic parlance) are carried out, and the resulting seeds (F1) harvested. In the second year, plants are raised from these seeds. Since Mendel is working with seed characters, the seeds that these plants carry will constitute the “first” generation of decendents of the product of the original cross according to the terminology employed by Mendel in the preceding sections (F2 in modern genetic parlance; see p. 12, s. 3). The correction in the manuscript shows that Mendel occasionally stumbled himself over his way of counting generations.
