It reads: Der geringere Grad von Variabilität bei Bastarden aus erster Kreuzung oder aus erster Generation im Gegensatze zu ihrer ausserordentlichen Veränderlichkeit in späteren Generationen ist eine eigenthümliche und Beachtung verdienende Thatsache; see Charles R. acting on = für […] thätig ist Bateson has “exists”, Sherwood “involved”. The German original employs a rather odd construction. With the preposition für (“for”) one would rather expect the adjective verantwortlich (“responsible”); thätig (“active”) would usually be used with the preposition bei or in, unless one is talking of persons working for another person or an institution.
