Die Fortpflanzungszellen, welche in dem Fruchtknoten und den Antheren derselben gebildet werden, sind gleichartig und stimmen mit der zu Grunde liegenden Vermittlungszelle überein.
The propagation cells that are formed in the ovaries and anthers of the descendants are of the same kind and correspond to the underlying mediating cell.

propagation cells = Fortpflanzungszellen See p. 41, s. 7.

Fruchtknoten = ovary Bateson has “seed vessels”, we follow Sherwood.

of the descendants = derselben Grammatically, the demonstrative pronoun can refer both to Hybride (fem. sing., “hybrid”) and Nachkommen (masc. pl., “descendants”) in the preceding sentence. Bateson translates “their seed vessels and anthers”, the reference remaining ambivalent because he uses the plural for hybrid in his translation of the previous sentence. Sherwood relates derselben to “its ovary and anthers”, where “its” clearly refers to the hybrid. We offer a different reading, since Mendel would just repeat what he already implied in the previous sentence — namely “that the hybrid embryo is formed from cells of the same kind” (dass der hybride Embryo aus gleichartigen Zellen gebildet wird) — on Sherwood’s reading. What he is emphasising in this sentence instead is that the descendants remain constant as well.

of the same kind = gleichartig See p. 41, s. 7.

mediating cell = Vermittlungszelle See p. 41, s. 9.
