Die daraus hervorgehende Vermittlungszelle wird zur Grundlage des Hybriden-Organismus, dessen Entwicklung nothwendig nach einem anderen Gesetze erfolgt, als bei jeder der beiden Stammarten.
The mediation cell emerging from this will form the foundation of the hybrid organism, whose development necessarily occurs according to a law other than that in the case of each of the two parent-species.
mediation cell= Vermittlungszelle Bateson has “compound cell”, an interesting choice of a chemical metaphor; from the context it is clear that this expression designates the “foundation cell” of hybrids, in which the differing “elements” need to come to a “compromise” according to the previous sentence. Vermittlung is another term with political connotations, designating a negotiating process aiming at the reconciliation of conflicting interests. It is interesting that Mendel introduces a separate term to designate the zygotes of hybrids.
hybrid organism = Hybriden-Organismus The manuscript has hybriden Organismus; strictly speaking, we would have had to translate “the organism of the hybrid” to remain true to the printed text. On the significance of this difference see p. 10, s. 12.
development = Entwicklung Mendel includes the development of descendants in the meaning of this term, and hence segregation in hybrids; see p. 3, s. 3.
law = Gesetz See p. 3, s. 6.
parent-species = Stammarten Bateson has “original species”, Sherwood “parental types”; see p. 5, s. 10.
