Die Geltung der für Pisum aufgestellten Sätze bedarf allerdings selbst noch der Bestätigung, und es wäre desshalb eine Wiederholung wenigstens der wichtigeren Versuche wünschenswerth, z. B. jener über die Beschaffenheit der hybriden Befruchtungszellen.
Yet the validity of the statements proposed for Pisum still requires confirmation itself, and a repetition of at least the more important experiments would therefore be desirable, for example of the ones about the constitution of hybrid fertilisation cells.

The manuscript originally had daher instead of deßhalb (which the printer typeset as desshalb). The two terms are synonymous.

statements = Sätze Bateson has “law”, Sherwood “laws”. Sätze is indeed the plural form for Satz, which can mean sentence in a grammatical sense, or proposition in a more mathematical sense. Since it has been debated whether Mendel formulated the laws he is famous for at all (see p. 18, s. 7), it is highly significant that he is using a more neutral expression here. He is probably referring to the sentences highlighted by spacing in Sections 8 and 9. These include statements about the constitution of fertilisation cells that he sometimes refers to as Satz (see, e.g., p. 29, s. 5) and that he invokes to explain the empirical regularities he was able to observe in Pisum (see p. 32, s. 2).

the ones about the constitution of hybrid fertilisation cells = jener über die Beschaffenheit der hybriden Befruchtungszellen Bateson as well as Sherwood translate Beschaffenheit as “composition”; see p. 24, s. 4. Mendel is referring to the back-crossing experiments reported under the heading “The fertilisation cells of hybrids” in Section 9 of his paper; see p. 24ff.
