repeated = wiederholt Strictly speaking, there is no repetition here. In a first step, two hybrids AaBbCcDdEe are produced by “reciprocal fertilisation” (see p. 9, s. 5) of forms ABCDE (“species A”) and abcde (“species B”). In a second step, these are then back-crossed with each of the two the parental forms, i.e., AaBbCcDdEe (“hybrid”) is crossed with abcde (“form B”) and with ABCDE (“form A”; we are using Mendel’s notation which he introduces on p. 17, s. 6). It is obvious, that from the first cross one obtains descendants with all possible combinations of dominant and recessive traits, while in the latter one only gets dominant traits and this is what the next sentence states. It may be, of course, that Mendel also carried out reciprocal crossings in the second step, but he does not mention this, and would not have expected any different results from this.
