In the first experiment B/A, 87 plants were available in the third year of the experiment for the selection of individuals for further fertilisation, and this in the possible 32 forms; for the second experiment A/B, 73 plants were obtained, which throughout in their habitus corresponded to the pollen plant, yet had to be as different with respect to their inner constitution as the forms from the other experiment.

The manuscript originally had allen, which was deleted and replaced by den.

BAAB The upper position is taken in by the pollen donor, the lower by the seed donor.

fertilisation = Befruchtung Bateson has “crossing”, we follow Sherwood. The asymmetry that exists on the practical level between pollen and seed donors influences the language here; it is the pollen that seems to “fertilize” since it is the pollen that the experimenter actively applies to the female reproductive organs in the flower. This is also symbolized in the “lower” position the seed donor (or the “female substrate” as Gärtner had it; see p. 45, s. 1) occupies in the symbolic expressions BA and AB.

32 forms = 32 Formen Mendel is applying the formula from p. See p. 3, s. 8.

habitus = Habitus See p. 42, s. 2.

constitution = Beschaffenheit See p. 24, s. 4.
