Even if unconditional validity cannot be awarded to this view, one does find in the experiments performed by Gärtner, on the other hand, a remarkable confirmation of the conjecture expressed earlier on the variability of cultivated plants .

In the manuscript, the sentence originally contained a second Ansicht, which was then deleted and replaced with Vermuthung.

unconditional validity cannot be awarded = eine bedingungslose Geltung nicht zuerkannt werden kann Bateson has “cannot be unconditionally accepted”, Sherwood “cannot be adjudged unconditionally valid”. Mendel expresses his doubts about the fixity of species rather cautiously here, but earlier on he states quite clearly that “constant hybrids” indubitably exist, and that these attain the status of “new species”; see p. 40, s. 8f. Such constant hybrids would indeed resist attempts to be transformed back again into one of their parent-species.

experiments performed by Gärtner = von Gärtner angestellten Versuchen Mendel probably refers to the transformation experiments he has discussed in the preceding, not Gärtner’s experiments in general. On Gärtner, see p. 3, s. 4.

conjecture expressed earlier = früher … ausgesprochenen Vermuthung This probably aims at p. 37, s. 4. Mendel sees his “conjecture” confirmed by Gärtner’s transformation experiments, since he has shown that they can be reconstructed by breaking them down into “hybrid series”; see p. 43, s. 10ff.
