(P. quadratum) Gärtner’s Versuche und Beobachtungen zur Bastarderzeugung im Pflanzenreich (Stuttgart: Hering, 1849), which Mendel consulted in his search for appropriate experimental plants (cf. p. 5, s. 12), has an entry for Pisum sativum in the index, but the text of Versuche und Beobachtungen does not discuss either of the species Mendel mentions here and on p. 8, s. 10, nor do they appear in the list of experiments Gärtner himself performed that concludes his book and that Mendel annotated. Mendel’s notes on the end flyleaf and inner cover of Gärtner’s book, in contrast, do mention P. quadratum, as well as P. saccharatum and P. umbellatum; see Carl Friedrich Gärtner, Versuche und Beobachtungen über die Bastarderzeugung im Pflanzenreich (Stuttgart: Hering, 1849), Mendel Museum, Collection of the Augustinian Abbey. It is therefore likely that Mendel culled the information on the morphological characteristics of the three varieties in these notes from taxonomic literature like Reichenbach’s Flora, which indeed states seed, pod, and flower form as differentiating traits (Heinrich Gottlieb Ludwig Reichenbach, Flora germanica excursoria ex affinitate regni vegetabilis naturali disposit, Leipzig: Cnobloch, 1830–1833, vol. 2, pp. 532–533; see p. 6, s. 15, for further discussion).
