2. Auf den Unterschied in der Färbung des Samen-Albumens (Endosperm’s).
2. To the difference in the colouration of the seed-albumen (of the endosperm).

colouration = Färbung See p. 7, s. 6.

seed albumen (of the endosperm) = Samen Albumens (Endosperm’s) The final “s” in the German original indicates genitive case. The use of an apostrophe is unusual, but it is also present in the manuscript. Mendel probably wanted to state that the albumen is formed by the endosperm, an information he probably drew from Stephan Endlicher and Franz Unger, Grundzüge der Botanik (Wien: Gerold, 1843), p. 345. Bateson adds a note that Mendel uses this term, as well as albumen, “somewhat loosley to denote the cotyledons”, a note that Sherwood reproduces in her translation. According to Franz Weindling, “Anmerkungen”, in: Gregor Mendel, Versuche über Pflanzenhybriden, Ostwalds Klassiker der Naturwissenschaften, Neue Folge, Band 6 (Braunschweig: Vieweg, 1970), p. 76, Mendel simply misidentified the source of the colour.
