At the same time, he derives the proof from this that Kölreuter’s opinion that “the two natures keep the most perfect balance in hybrids” is not quite tenable after all.
Kölreuter’s opinion = Ansicht Kölreuter’s The quotation appears in Gärtner’s book, and is in turn a quotation from Kölreuter. A comparison with the original (Joseph Gottlieb Kölreuter, Fortsetzung der vorläufigen Nachricht von einigen das Geschlecht der Pflanzen betreffenden Versuchen und Beobachtungen, Leipzig: Gleditsch, 1763, p. 16) reveals that Gärtner quotes Kölreuter correctly, but out of context. Kölreuter made the statement with regard to one particular crossing involving two tobacco species (Nicotiana paniculata and N. rustica). Mendel marked Gärtner’s quotation of Kölreuter’s claim with a cross in the margin in the library copy of his monastery; see Carl Friedrich Gärtner, Versuche und Beobachtungen über die Bastarderzeugung im Pflanzenreich (Stuttgart: Hering, 1849), Mendel Museum, Collection of the Augustinian Abbey, p. 472.
